Dr. June St. Clair Atkinson, the NC State Superintendent for Public Instruction writes: "Have you ever heard of the term summer loss? This is not a drop in profits that local businesses may see when families go on vacation, but a troubling trend in which students lose valuable literacy skills when they stop reading during their break from school. Low-income children are especially susceptible to this problem because they often go home to text-free environments. By the end of fifth grade, these students are approximately 2 ½ years behind their more affluent peers in terms of reading ability , primarily because of summer loss. For this reason, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has launched the “Give Five – Read Five” campaign."

FUMC is responding by collecting books for our partner schools. The Children at FUMC have a goal of collecting 60 books (one for every FUMC elementary school child on the rolls). Children are encouraged to donate new or gently used books before June 1st. Any book is welcome but a suggested reading list is posted on Sarah's door.

Nursery

Children are always welcome in our worship services but for those who would rather play with friends in a loving environment with qualified caregivers, please visit the following locations depending on the child's age.

Silent pagers are provided for your comfort and so caregivers may contact you should the need arise. Please sign your children in and out of the nursery.
